How to self assess your language skills

The cruise industry is a truly global employer and having good language skills are imperative to obtain a position on board a cruise ship.

Regardless of where the cruise line is based or what nationality the majority of guests are, having English language skills can only be a benefit.

Every CV/Resume will more than likely include a section for stating your language skills. While some people would rate their language skills as "basic", others would put themselves into the category of "good". This can and will easily make a recruiter decide to get in touch with you or not.

How to self assess your language skills

In order to impress a potential employer by providing them with an honest assessment of your language skills, it is best to use international recognized language proficiency codes.

There are two major English language tests in the world. One is TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language), the other is IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

While these tests are extensive, there also exists the CEFR system (Common European Framework of Reference for languages) which can be done easily and online and is free of charge.

Most of these tests are split into listening/speaking, reading and writing. As we all know the skills someone has, can differ greatly between how well one can understand and how well one can write.

I suggest you also list your language skills with these distinctions. Starting with your mothers language – there you would only need to write mothers tongue.

For the other languages you know, use the assessment you receive when doing an online test.

By doing this, you will avoid giving yourself an incorrect assessment plus you will avoid giving the person receiving your CV or Resume, the wrong impression. You will also help them to not interpret your statements incorrectly and possibly not in your favor.

To find the suitable tests online, just do a search for free online language tests. If you add also the specific language in your search, you will find a suitable test more quickly.

Good luck and who knows, we might meet on board a cruise ship soon.
